Paul Gallico is one of my favorite writers and these two short stories are his best known. The Snow Goose is about Dunkirk and fulfilling life's purpose and growing up and appreciating life. The Small Miracle is about faith and perseverance and innocence. They are both short and sweet and left me wistful. flag 1 like Like see review. by Paul Gallico Author, Sir John Mills Reader. The Snow Goose is the third studio album by the band Camel, released in 1975. The critical success of The White Rider suite based on J. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and appearing on the band's previous 1974 album, Mirage inspired the group to write more novel-inspired conceptual suites. The band considered several novels on which to base their next album. For a time they settled on Siddhartha, by Hermann Hesse, and some songs were written before the idea was abandoned in favour of Paul. There can be few more wintry tales than Paul Gallico's wartime classic The Snow Goose, a novella no thicker than a love letter, in which every sentence seems to shiver with the salt-laden chill of the desolate landscape in which it is set. As if inverting the Persephone myth, the world of the novella only comes to life during the winter months, when both the young girl Fritha and the goose return each year to Philip Rhayader's lonesome sanctuary on the Essex marshes.
